Working on the design and prototype of an events app taught me a lot about focusing on what users actually need. I learned how important it is to make the app easy to navigate while still looking good. Prototyping was especially helpful because it allowed me to test out ideas and make changes based on feedback before moving forward. I also discovered how much effort goes into balancing how the app looks with how it works. Overall, it was a hands-on experience that helped me understand the process of creating something practical and user-friendly.
Throughout the weeks working on VEA, I gained hands-on experience in understanding the core principles of interface design, particularly in balancing compelling visuals with intuitive interactions in digital systems. Interviews and playtesting emphasized how users can interpret designs in ways that go beyond our initial assumptions. This underscored the importance of aligning both visual and functional elements with users’ mental models and intuitive thought processes to create a user-friendly and efficient experience. VEA expanded my understanding of how universal design principles are conceptualized and deepened my appreciation diverse user types and their varying interpretations of interface design, reflecting different worldviews and cultural contexts. This broader perspective has influenced how I now approach design, encouraging greater inclusivity and adaptability considerations.

Working on this project from start to finish taught me valuable lessons in both design and problem-solving. Initially, I was excited to use ProtoPie to create interactive prototypes, but encountered technical challenges that prevented the flow from working as expected. This experience taught me the importance of flexibility in the design process and reinforced that good design isn’t just about a polished, flawless product—it’s about adapting to constraints and finding solutions. The iterative nature of the project, fuelled by constant critique from my peers, helped me refine the app’s user experience and iterate quickly.

Challenges
The construction of VEA was developed using Figma for design and initially ProtoPie for prototyping. However, we later switched back to Figma Prototyping due to several challenges. While these tools were essential in bringing our ideas to life, our team encountered delays, collaboration hurdles, and external factors. With limited time, we had to quickly adapt and explore new methods to continue progressing. Additionally, our video production process utilized Synthesia and Adobe Premiere. These challenges underscored the importance of flexibility, problem-solving, and adaptability in selecting the right tools and finding innovative solutions to maintain project momentum and ensure a successful outcome.
